In 1745, John Woolston purchased 300 acres of land around the vicinity of Port Colden for about $120 (less than 50 cents an acre). Twenty years later, Newbold Woolston built the first house in the Port Colden area. The beautiful old stone house is still standing near the old trolley barn.
In the late 1700's and early 1800's, the Methodist Church services were held in the Woolston family's barn. A circuit rider was paid to stop on Tuesday evenings once every four weeks to hold services.
