Canal Stores

There were at least three stores near the canal in Port Colden. All three sold groceries, hardware, crockery, hats, boots, shoes, drugs, medicine and many other goods to the canalers and locals.

William Dusenberry had built a store on the North side of the canal. In the 1830's, there was a post office established in his store. It was converted into a paper mill and then destroyed by fire about 1870. There is no record of it being rebuilt.

The Nunn-Skinner Store was built sometime between 1852 and 1860. It was owned and operated by Cornelius Stewart. It was later owned by David Wyckoff, the Nunn family and finally the Skinner family. It was so successful for several years that it was nicknamed "The Wannamaker of Warren County." The building, greatly changed, is still standing across from the Port Colden School playground and is now an apartment building.

The Widener Store was a smaller store found near the lock on Lock Street. It was also built between 1852 and 1860. It was still in operation in 1874, but it is not known when it closed and was remodeled into a home - there are still old brick bake ovens located in the basement.
