No matter how good you are at
disciplining (teaching) your child, you’ll always have new parenting challenges
ahead. That’s why it is important to
remember some basics that can help in many situations. For example:
·
Be consistent. It is reassuring for your child to know that
rules and consequences will be enforced every time. Otherwise, she will try out all kids of
things to see what happens. Set a few
specific, age-appropriate limits, explain them to your child – don’t forget to
follow through.
·
Use praise. You’ve probably noticed that your child loves
attention, so it is no surprise that compliments work! Be specific about your child’s successes. “Wow.
You put away every single game.
That’s so helpful!”
·
Set a good example. It is not enough to tell your child how to
behave. You must show her, too. It is not easy, for instance, to stay calm
when you’re angry. But try your best.
·
Emphasize
behavior. When your child misbehaves,
correct her actions without labeling her.
Say, “That word is inappropriate,” not, “You’re so rude.” Help her behave well and take pride in
herself.
The Washington Township School District Family
Assistance Committee has been approved by the Board of Education to provide aid
to families in our school community that are in immediate need. As the committee learns of special situations
that negatively impact our families, the committee evaluates how they can be of
support and then proceeds to find ways that can help ease their burden. All information is confidential. Please contact the school counselor at
908-689-1188 ext. 611 for more information.
NJASK testing to students in
grades 3 & 4 will take place March 10th – March 14th
with make-up testing to follow the week of March 17th. Testing will take place in the mornings on
the dates indicated so it is very important that students arrive on time, fully
rested during the testing period.
Students will not be allowed to enter their classrooms after testing has
started for the day.
“Mom, I left my math homework
on the table – can you bring it to me at school? Those are familiar words in many homes. Forgotten soccer cleats, lunches, permission
slips – if you make the delivery run, you may be setting him up for a lifetime
of bad habits. Instead, help your child
develop a daily routine. Help your child
pack up the night before and check with them to make sure they are ready for
school each day. Start now to prepare
your child for a lifetime of responsibility.
