Our students recently followed the progress of the annual "Iditarod" sled dog race across Alaska.
This race covers about 1,100 miles from Anchorage to Nome Alaska. It celebrates the famous journey
taken by the legendary sled dog, Balto, who succesfully delivered serum saving many lives from a
deadly diptheria epidemic. Students created wall sized maps of Alaska in conjunction with the
reading of our current class novel, Julie of the Wolves. Each student then chose
one of the "mushers" from this year's race, made a marker to represent him or her and tracked
their progress along the Iditarod route.
