Looking at Owl Pellets

After reading There's an Owl in the Shower by Jean Craighead George, Mrs. Lee's 5th grade reading class had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets. They gently pulled apart the compacted fur to reveal almost complete skeletons of the animals that had been consumed by the owls. At first some of the students' faces revealed their apprehension, but soon they became totally engulfed in the project. They enjoyed uncovering and identifying the skull, scapula, ribs, pelvic bones, vertebrae, etc. Most students found their skeleton to be a small rodent, but one student found a bird. Some students were lucky enough to find two animals in their pellets. The owl pellet activity was a great culminating activity for this book.
