Washington Township School District

Dear Parents,

That magical age called five is a time of wonder, questions, curiosity and new adventures. It is energy beyond belief and a time of quick sorrows and much laughter.

School will be a new experience for your child. With your help, the experience will be a happy and productive one. Your attention to daily reports about class experiences at school and your interest in things brought home will develop self respect and a greater sense of security. These attitudes, coupled with the skills that will be acquired in kindergarten, will help build the foundation for success throughout school life. This handbook is designed to introduce the kindergarten experience to you, the parents of a kindergarten pupil. The suggestions in it are offered for your information and guidance. We hope that you will find them helpful.

THE KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

KINDERGARTEN PROVIDES

Carefully directed activities help the kindergarten pupil in his/her emotional and physical adjustment to group behavior and learning. During the 2-1/2 hour kindergarten day a well-balanced program provides time for:

  • quiet and active experience;

  • indoor and outdoor activities;

  • individual and group activities; and

  • child-selected as well as teacher-directed learning activities.

KINDERGARTEN PURPOSES

The type of experiences sought for each child are those designed to:

  • increase skills of communication;

  • enhance physical and mental development and social, emotional and physical adjustment;

  • develop understanding of natural and scientific environment;

  • encourage creativity and appreciation of the creative expression of others;

  • develop ability to work and share with others; and

  • increase ability to listen and follow directions.

These experiences are gained by planned activities in science, language arts, music, mathematics, art and crafts, motor development and health.

Each teacher allows considerable flexibility in scheduling activities that are appropriate to the needs, interest, and abilities of the children in her class. It is unlikely, nor is it expected, that any two kindergarten days will be exactly alike.

YOUR KINDERGARTEN CHILD WILL DO...

A typical kindergarten day may include any of the following:

  • looking at books;

  • listening to stories;

  • dictating stories to the teacher;

  • dramatizations of stories;

  • experiences to develop an understanding of numbers;

  • math;

  • science;

  • drawing, painting, crafts;

  • singing;

  • rhymes;

  • outdoor play; and

  • experiences to identify and recognize letters and sounds.

WAYS IN WHICH PARENTS CAN PREPARE THEIR CHILD FOR KINDERGARTEN

PREPARE YOUR CHILD TO...

Identify himself/herself by:

  • knowing his/her name;

  • knowing his/her address;

  • knowing his/her telephone number; and

  • knowing age and birth date.

Care for his/her personal needs-teach him/her to

  • tie shoes;

  • put on coat, hat, boots;

  • zip, snap, or button both light jacket and winter jacket;

  • use the bathroom without help;

  • use a tissue;

  • recognize own clothing (please label inside clothing); and

  • open juice or milk container.

Encourage good social habits by:

  • getting along with others;

  • showing respect for all school personnel;

  • listening;

  • following directions;

  • playing with other children;

  • taking turns;

  • sharing;

  • respecting the possessions of others;

  • putting away toys and clothes; and

  • appropriately saying hello and goodbye to his/her parents.

Teach your child to:

  • cross the street only at corners;

  • look for oncoming cars;

  • take shortest and safest route to school;

  • obey the crossing guard, school safety patrol and bus driver;

  • refuse rides from strangers;

  • remain seated and behave properly on the school bus; and

  • know what to do when parents are not at home when he/she returns from school.

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD ACQUIRE READINESS FOR THE KINDERGARTEN LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Encourage your child to:

  • speak in sentences;

  • recognize colors;

  • distinguish shapes;

  • compare sizes;

  • sit through a story; and

  • make simple decisions.

Familiarize him/her to the joy of reading

Read to him/her regularly or let older children in the family read to him/her

Take him/her to the library and let him/her select picture books

Let him/her see that reading is important and that adults enjoy reading

Encourage him/her to express himself/herself

Help add to his/her vocabulary by reading signs or labels that attract his/her attention

Explain to him/her to understand what he/she is seeing when you go places together

Express your joy when he/she tells a story or talks about the things that interest him/her

Try to answer his/her questions promptly and honestly

Ask him/her questions so that he/she can learn critical thinking

    COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

    If it is your first child who is entering kindergarten you will be sharing his/her school life for many years. You can become much better informed about school and school programs by attending meetings of the Parent Teacher Association and Board of Education.

    "New and Notes" are distributed to all parents monthly and news releases are sent to local media as part of the ongoing communications program of the school district.

    If you have any questions that pertain to your child or his/her school, please contact the teacher of school administration.

    TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS

    The Washington Township Board of Education's policy regarding alternate route requests is intended to reduce, as much as possible, potential errors of dropping students off at incorrect locations where they have no adult supervision. In this regard, only permanent route changes will be considered. Requests must be submitted in writing. Parents or other designated individuals are required to meet a kindergartener's bus. If another perosn meeting the bus is different than the parent, notification must be sent to the office before the bus leaves the school.

    A. Occasional Requests from parents to have their children dropped off at a location other than their own home will be accommodated only under the following circumstances:

    1. The alternate stop is on the same bus run the student normally takes;

    2. The requests are occasional only and do not represent a standard pattern of dropping the student off at a different location;

    3. Each request is for a single day only;

    4. Each request is made in writing, verified, and approved by the transportation coordinator or principal designee in the absence of transportation coordinator and presented to the bus driver. Without a note, the driver will drop the student off only at his/her assigned bus stop or return him or her to school;

    5. Occasional request will be denied if the student is to ride any bus other than his/her normal bus home (Parents are requested to provide transportation);

    6. Under no circumstances will the student be dropped off at one location on some day and another location on other days; and

    7. Only in an emergency situation will a student be permitted to ride a different bus other than his/her normal bus. Notification must be made by the parent to the transportation coordinator or school principal before such a change is made.

    B. Permanent requests from parents to have their children picked up or dropped off at a location other than their home, including babysitter, will be accommodated only under the following circumstances:

    1. All requests must be submitted in writing to the supervisor of transportation via fax (908) 689-2946 or mailed to 16 Castle Street, Washington, NJ 07882.

    2. All requests will be for a permanent change for each day of the entire school year.

    3. Under no circumstances will a student be dropped off at one location on some days and another location on other days. A child may be picked up at a different stop on the same bus route the child normally rides as long as the stop is an established stop, the parent is responsible to see that the child gets to the alternate stop and the change is approved by the Transportation Coordinator. Additional stops will not be created for this purpose.

    4. The permanent alternate stop will be the same for the abbreviated sessions, half days, emergency mid-day closings, the days before vacations, etc.

    5. Requests for a permanent change which requires a bus other than the one normally serving the student's own home will be accommodated only if space is available and only if the bus does not have to leave its normal routing within the boundaries for that school. If at any time during the school year new students are admitted to the district, babysitting requests will be removed from a route if the bus is over capacity to make room for the new student. Parents will have to make other arrangements.

    6. Requests will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Requests will be accepted no later than August 1st prior to the start of the school year. Requests must be sent in writing to the transportation coordinator. Students will be assigned as the previous year unless change is requested.

    7. Spaces will not be reserved for babysitters or day care centers. All requests must come directly from the parents or legal guardians.

    8. Any requests for occasional changes will be accommodated in strict compliance with the provisions for occasional changes stated above (see section A). For students permanently being dropped off at a babysitter without a note, however,the driver will drop the student off only at the babysitter or return him/her to school. (This is to insure that the student is not left at a location without supervision).

    SCHOOL NURSE AND HEALTH PROGRAM

    In order to insure adequate coverage of the schools, the Board of Education employs the services of two (2) full-time school nurses.

    If a child is absent from school, the nurse must be notified as to the nature of the absence. A message may be left on the nurse's absentee line 24 hours a day, 689-1188, option #1.

    Our provisions for your child's health, including local and state regulations, are described on the following pages. Your cooperation will help keep your child and other children well.

    DANGER SIGNALS-

    For the protection of your child and his/her classmates your child should be kept home if he/she has been ill during the night or shows any of these symptoms of illness:

    • Sore throat

    • Chills

    • Runny nose

    • Fever

    • Severe coughing

    • Diarrhea

    • Inflamed eye

    • Red or swollen joints

    • Ear ache

    • Skin rash

    • Discharging ear

    • Flushed face

    • Enlarged glands

    • Unusual paleness

    • Nausea or vomiting

    • Over-fatigue

    Sending a child to school when he/she is ill may delay his/her recovery, spread infection to other children and necessitate a trip to school by the parents to take the child home. The temperature should be normal for 24 hours before the child returns to school.

    When the child returns to school following an absence for illness, he/she should bring a note stating the reason for the absence and the inclusive date or dates.

    EXCLUSION FOR HEALTH REASONS-

    In accordance with New Jersey State Law (18A:40-7,8), a pupil may be excluded from school when he/she has symptoms that indicate a serious infection or illness and/or his/her condition endangers the health of other pupils. The parent will be notified of the reason. The child will be re admitted when the condition is no longer present and a doctor's note verifies that the child may return to school.

    DOCTORS NOTES -

    Please secure a docctor's note for the nurse if you child has any surgery, i.e. tonsillectomy, ear tubes, etc. and/or treatment for a broken bone or laceration. Please have the doctor indicate the name of surgery or procedure and whether or not it will affect school/recess activities.

    COMMUNICABLE DISEASES-

    When a child has been confined because of a communicable disease, it is necessary for the parent to bring the child to the school nurse to be examined before re-entering school. The minimum time that shall elapse before he/she returns to school is prescribed by the State Board of Health as follows:

    • Measles - 5 days after rash appears, skin must be clear

    • German measles - 3 days after rash appears, skin must be clear

    • Chicken pox - 6 days after onset of rash, all lesions must be dry

    • Mumps - at least 6 days, all swelling must be gone

    • Scarlet fever - 24 hours after initial dose of antibiotic

    • Whooping cough - 21 days after onset of paroxysmal cough

    HEALTH RECORDS AND EXAMINATIONS-

    Health records are maintained by the school nurses for every child in the Washington Township Schools. During the kindergarten year your child will have his height and weight checked and will receive screenings for vision and hearing. Health screenings will continue throughout the elementary grades.

    The nurse notifies parents of any defects that are found during the screening. Parents are advised to consult an appropriate practitioner as soon as possible and are requested to inform the school of any corrections that are made.

    POLICY ON MEDICATION-

    A Board of Education policy requires that whenever it is necessary for a child to be medicated during school hours, the medication must be prescribed by a physician and arrangements for dispensing said medicine must be made through the office of the school nurse.

    The physician must send written orders stating the name of the medication, the dosage, the reason for its use and the time it is to be given. It must also be sent in the original drug store container. *This applies to prescription and over the counter medication as well. Children are not permitted to transport medication on the school bus. In addition, the school must also have a note from the parent giving permission for the medication to be administered as prescribed by the physician. Medication forms can be picked up in the Health Office.

    PROTECTION DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

    If a child becomes ill or is injured at school, he/she will receive first aid and will be kept at school until you are notified and can come to take him/her home. It is most important that the school have an up-to-date emergency number to call if you cannot be reached by telephone.

    SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS

    THE FIRST DAYS AT SCHOOL-

    Your child's kindergarten assignment will be confirmed by mail before school opens. You will be notified of his/her school, teacher, hours and transportation information (if he/she is eligible for transportation at the expense of the Board of Education). This is a good time to familiarize him with the route, by walking with him/her to school or to the bus stop several times. You might also want to make plans for him/her to go to and from school with other children who live on your street.

    Be sure that your child can be identified. Young children sometimes forget their name and address! The child should be "tagged" with a card showing his/her name as well as bus number (if he/she is a rider). All outer garments (coats, jackets, hats, boots and sweaters) and lunch and snack boxes should be labeled with a name tape or marking pencil.

    If your child is transported by bus, please let him use the bus from the first day. Your confidence in his ability to be "on his/her own" will speed his adjustment to school.

    THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR-

    Clothing selected for school wear should be simple, comfortable, sturdy, easy for the child to manage, and washable.

    Tapes or loops will make it easier for the child to hang up his/her clothing. Markings will make it easier for the child and the teacher to identify individual garments.

    Boots should be large enough for the child to put on and take off by himself/herself.

    Your child will need a smock for various activities. (A large, old shirt with sleeves cut short will suffice.) Please put the child's name on it.

    Regular attendance is required except when a child is ill, absent for approved religious holidays, or for emergency reasons. A note stating the reason for absence is required on the child's first day back at school.

    Punctuality is expected. Please see that your child has enough time to get to school but that he is not on the school grounds more than ten minutes before the sessions begins. If it is necessary for your child to arrive late, he/she should bring a note to give to his/her teacher.

    It helps to establish a routine well in advance of the opening of school so that the child will have plenty of time to wash, dress, and eat an unhurried breakfast or lunch (depending upon his kindergarten schedule), put on outer clothes suitable to the weather and leave home early enough to arrive at school on time.

    If you wish your child to share a birthday with classmates, please check with the teacher before the birthday date.

    Each day your child will have a snack time. Please send in a snack (not a lunch) and a drink. at school.

    Please note that the school may not grant permission for your child to ride the bus if he/she is not regularly transported in that manner. Also, children are not permitted to ride a bus other than the one to which they are assigned, except in emergency situations.

    If there is any change in your child's pattern of going home such as: (a) early dismissal or (b) if you wish your child to go home with another child please send in a written note to the teacher. All children who are dismissed early must be discharged from the school office.

    SAFETY TIPS

    Safety Not Snagging

    • Drawstrings

    • Backpacks

    • Baggy Clothes

    Drawstrings on jackets, sweatshirts and other clothing items as well as backpack straps pose a danger to your child. These items have become snagged on school bus doors and playground equipment. Incidents of snagged drawstrings have resulted in injuries and even deaths.

    The most effective way to prevent these hazards is for parents and caregivers to ensure that their children do not wear or carry anything likely to become entangled. The simplest solution is to either remove or cut all drawstrings from clothing and shorten book bag/backpack straps.

    We look forward to an "incident free year."
