What is Title I?

$Title I is a program that enables us to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities for all our students to meet challenging state performance standards.

$Our Title I program supports the district’s mission statement

$The Washington Borough School District, together in a partnership with our families, will build a community of lifelong learners and provide a balanced curriculum that meets the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of all our students.

Selection Process

Children identified as having the greatest need for special assistance are selected using the following criteria: the results of standardized tests, district assessments, teacher recommendation based on actual classroom performance, and report card assessment.

Title I Programs

The Washington Borough School District has three Title I programs that supplement math and language arts:

Reading Recovery                Reading Recovery is a nationally recognized program for identified first grade students. The first graders receive a thirty minute one-on-one reading lesson daily. This intensive instruction is provided by a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher for the duration of 12 to 20 weeks.

Literacy Groups                    First and second grade students receive additional assistance in reading and writing through literacy groups taught in collaboration with the regular classroom teacher. Instruction takes place in the classroom.

Reading & Math Support     Students receive small group instruction in reading and math which supplements the regular reading and math programs in grades one through six. Assistance is targeted to the individual student to provide them with the support needed to meet grade level expectation.

Reporting of Student Progress

All parents will receive quarterly progress reports. Individual conferences may be requested at conference times or at other times by contacting the school office at (908) 689-0091 for Taylor Street School or (908) 689-0241 at Memorial School.

Parent Involvement

Washington Borough School District recognizes that parents and teachers working together is vital in maximizing the potential of each student in an academically challenging environment.

$Each year a parent information session is held during scheduled Back-to- School nights. At this time the programs, objectives, and program evaluations will be explained.

$Specific information on student progress will be shared during parent/ teacher conferences in November and February.

$Each parent will receive a copy of the School-Parent Compact, which defines the shared responsibility for improving student academic achievement.

$In The Loop, the parent newsletter, will be distributed monthly to address specific strategies and activities to improve student academic achievement and performance.

$Surveys are distributed to assess parents’ interest in various classes that may be offered during the academic year to increase parent involvement in their child’s learning.

$Opportunities for parents to volunteer are highlighted at Back—to-school night and specific training sessions are held for classroom volunteers. Family event nights are held throughout the year.

$A Parent Compact is sent home with each student receiving Title 1 services.

$Parent resource materials are available through the Health Office and the Child Study Team office.
