Teacher:   Mrs. Drechsel          Subject:   Mathematics         Students:  6th, 7th, 8th math

 

Objectives:  Students will create a PowerPoint presentation, use the internet to find

information, create a spreadsheet in Excel using mathematical formulas, and

create a pie chart

Standards: 4.1, 4.4, 4.5, 8.1

 

Materials:  PowerPoint Presentation, informational handouts, laptop

 

Technology: PowerPoint, Laptops, internet, Inspiration, Excel

 

Procedures:

  1. Introduce Thanksgiving Day Project through the use of a PowerPoint demonstration.  Review each aspect of the lesson using student handouts
  2. Discuss Rubric and grading
  3. Allow students to begin researching for project – answer any questions

YOUR TASK

  1. You will be planning a Thanksgiving Day meal for you and your family and friends
  2. First you must identify how many people will be eating at your house and what food you will be preparing
  3. Next you must calculate the cost of the food and any other decorations you will using
  4. Finally you must calculate the cost per person for your dinner

THE PROCESS

  1. Create a list of your food menu/decorations(use Inspiration to make a web) along with prices in a spreadsheet – use at least 2 formulas
  2. Create a pie chart to add to your presentation
  3. On page 2 of your spreadsheet calculate what your dinner costs per person
  4. Create a PowerPoint that includes your menu, any decorations you used, your pie chart, your spreadsheets, anyone who will be attending your dinner, future studies meal idea, and your resource

 

Assessment:  Student participation and questions – final PowerPoint presentation

 

Extended Activities: Presentations

 

Modifications or Instructional Strategies: Help some students with formulas and ideas so

they can complete the project

6th graders – only need 1 formula and one spreadsheet page for presentation

Work with a partner

Leave meal/decorations open to different lifestyles
