Lesson Plan Title: Multiplication Fact Rhyme

Teacher: McKenzie Laubach

Subject: Math

NJCCC Standards Addressed: 4.1B, 4.5F

Objectives: To develop a memory trick for a difficult multiplication fact, to share memory devices to increase recall of multiplication facts

Required Materials: Computer with PowerPoint or MS Paint and printer

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Ability to open and save to student folders, ability to insert clip art

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1.     Warm-up: List the 5 multiplication facts you find hardest to remember.

2.     Discussion: Ways students utilize currently to remember multiplication facts

3.     3 minute fact test – from Everyday Math book

4.     10 minutes to go over fact triangles with a partner, keeping of pile of those that were instantly recalled vs. those not instantly recalled or incorrect.

5.     Shade in instantly recalled facts on a multiplication chart worksheet.

6.     Each student selects an unshaded fact from their multiplication chart.

7.     Students develop rhymes for their fact on paper.

8.     Using PowerPoint, students create book page that includes their multiplication fact rhyme and an illustration of it.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Given copies of the book created, students go over fact triangles again and do another 3 minute facts test to show an improvement of the typically difficult multiplication facts

Assessment Based On Objectives: Collect printouts and assemble into book, grade facts test based on improvement between first and second one
