Lesson Plan Title: Decimal Word Problem

Teacher: Mrs. Laubach

Subject: Math

NJCCC Standards Addressed: 4.1A, 4.1B, 4.5A, 4.5B, 4.5F

Objectives: To complete addition and subtraction operations with decimals, to understand real world application of decimals, to translate from number story to number sentence

Required Materials: Computer with Kid Pix software

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Ability to save into student folders, Some knowledge/prior use of Kid Pix 

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1.     Warm-Up: 5.34 + 12.7 and 14.3 – 2.68

2.     Discussion of important things to remember when adding or subtracting with decimals (lining up decimals, adding zeros into unused places).

3.     Discussion of situations (other than school) where decimals are used.

4.     Together: Complete Decimal Word Problems worksheet.

5.     Students use Kid Pix to create a decimal word problem of their own by following directions on Decimal Slide worksheet.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Students share their decimal word problems and classmates calculate answers, discuss how students determined whether they would be adding or subtracting
