Operation Hit the Pavement

A WebQuest Designed by McKenzie Laubach

Intermediate Math Teacher

You are a reporter for the school newspaper and have been assigned an article regarding the usefulness of math in the job market.

This activity is designed to provide an answer to the question, "When are we ever going to use this math?" The intent is to show students the importance of mathematics in the real world.

Task

In this activity, students will review the various sites that are listed in the resource section of this WebQuest.

Students will fill out the job search worksheet that is provided in the process section of this WebQuest.

Students will write a one page, typed newspaper article on the job topic they select. The article will have one picture included.

Process

  • Go to each of the web sites in the resources section of this WebQuest.
  • From each site, choose 2 careers that you are interested in which require math.
  • Fill in the required information (including the math that is necessary) for each job you choose on the Job Search Worksheet.
  • Fill in the bottom of the worksheet with 2 careers you found which required a knowledge of Algebra, our current unit of study.
  • Fill in the Notecard for the career you have decided to report on.
  • Type a draft of your newspaper article. Print 2 copies and have 2 other students proof-read it and offer suggestions on the Proof-reading Worksheets.
  • Write and print your final copy of your newspaper article including a picture.
