Definition & Characteristics of Thematic Units:

* Organization of curriculum around macro"themes"
* Integrates basic disiplines such as reading, math and science with the exploration of a broad subject
* Usually occurs within an entire grade level of students where teachers work as teams to define curriculum, instructional methods, and assessment

Rationale:

* People acquire knowledge best when learning in the context of a coherent whole
* People acquire knowledge best when they can connect what they are learning to the real world

Themes are best when:

* Safe environments where all students can learn are available
* Appropriate levels of challenge are evident
* Personalized meaning of ideas and skills are encouraged
* Activities address multiple intelligences
