SPANISH I
prerequisite - none 5 credits
This course is designed for students who have not studied foreign language. Through exposure to the Spanish language, the student begins to develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Cultural awareness is fostered through the study of various aspects of life in the Spanish-speaking world. The course goals include developing functional knowledge of the basic elements of language, vocabulary, and structure and their initial acquisition of listening, comprehension, and speaking skills. To meet these goals, instruction will include a variety of approaches which will support learning Spanish phonetics and developing strategies for self-guided, paired, and small group practice. In addition, students will develop linguistic and non-linguistic strategies for recall and recognition of vocabulary and will be evaluated by a number of different assessment types.
SPANISH II prerequisite - Spanish I 5 Credits
This course focuses on grammar, listening, reading, and comprehension. The course goals focus on students’ developing a conversational understanding of the language.
HONORS SPANISH I prerequisite - 1 to 2 years of Spanish 5 Credits
This is a comprehensive introduction program that enables students to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing competency in Spanish. Students will use language to perform tasks while developing an appropriate level of proficiency.
HONORS SPANISH II prerequisite - Honors Spanish I 5 Credits
This course continues to develop, at an accelerated rate, the skills begun in the first year. More complex grammatical structures will be studied and the scope of vocabulary is expanded in order to introduce students to idiomatic expressions. Oral and written skills will be refined. Vocabulary and reading skills are expanded through authentic readings. Cultural awareness continues through the study of Spanish-speaking nations throughout the world.
SPANISH III prerequisite - Honors Spanish II 5 Credits
Spanish III is an honors-level course that students are recommended for by their teachers. This course is a continuation of Spanish II. It is designed to further develop reading comprehension, writing skills, listening comprehension, and conversational speaking skills. In addition, the course will introduce students to Spanish-American Literature. This curriculum will be implemented through linguistic exercises, writing prompts, and group presentations and activities.
