Students who participate in Warren Tech’s Health Science career major are exposed to the expansive career paths available in health care:  nursing assistants, medical assistants, phlebotomists, lab techs, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and more.  The program is designed to prepare students to enter the health care work force and/or further their education to attain post-secondary degrees.  Warren County Technical School partners with New Jersey’s University of Medicine and Dentistry Health Science Careers program to offer successful* students the opportunity to earn up to 22 college credits* at no charge.  The core curriculum emphasizes science, the human and organizational side of health care, and clinical experience.

HEALTH SCIENCE I    prerequisites- none                      10 credits
This year will be composed of coursework introducing health science and its career possibilities. The coursework will include hands-on experiences as well as an overview of anatomy and physiology.  Students gain exposure to professionals in the field.
HEALTH SCIENCE II    prerequisites- Health Sciences I                     10 credits
Students continue to be exposed to hands-on experiences in health care.  Additionally, medical ethics, medical terminology, and medical math from the UMDNJ Health Science Careers program will be an integral part of the curriculum.  Biology and Psychology are intended to be a co-requisite.

HEALTH SCIENCE III    prerequisites- Health Sciences II, Biology, Psychology                                                  15 credits
Students are immersed in the UMDNJ offerings.  Classes include Dynamics of Health in Society, Scientific Principles of Nutrition, and Anatomy and Physiology I.  Students will be exposed to various clinical experiences.  Chemistry or Biochemistry is intended to be a co-requisite.

HEALTH SCIENCE IV     prerequisites- Health Sciences III, Chemistry or Biochemistry                                                   15 credits
Continuing with the UMDNJ offerings, the curriculum will include Anatomy & Physiology II and Emergency & Clinical Care.  Senior year culminates with students selecting and participating in a specific-path clinical experience.

*In order for students to be eligible for earning college credit, specific coursework (prerequisites) must be completed as well as attaining a passing class grade for exams administered by UMDNJ.

UMDNJ Note: Successful completion of remedial courses in English or Mathematics will count toward the total number of credits required for graduation but will not satisfy the curriculum requirements for English or Mathematics.

Graduation Requirements

The following are high school graduation requirements as established through state law/regulations or Board policy.

Satisfactory completion of a Board of Education approved program consisting of:
4 years of English
4 years of Health/Physical Education
3 years of Social Studies (World History, U.S. History I, and U.S. History II)
3 years of Mathematics and 3 years of Science
1 year of Fine, Practical, or Performing Arts
1 year of Business Management
Senior Year Research Paper
1 year of a World Language (2 years for college prep)

A senior must take and complete a national or state-validated test in their vocational area. Students must take a class every period.  There are NO STUDY HALLS. It is anticipated that students, on average, will graduate with 170 credits, inclusive of state-mandated and CTE requirements. Students must pass the HSPA in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing in order to receive a diploma unless exempt through the I.E.P. process.

Students who fail their Career Major/Academy Program or three or more courses for the entire year will not be re-admitted to WCTS for the following year.

Each course of study required for graduation shall include a statement of the required proficiencies to be mastered by the students enrolled in the course.  Credit for each required course will be awarded upon the successful completion of the program assigned and satisfaction of the proficiencies identified.  Students shall be given every reasonable opportunity to remediate and satisfy failed proficiencies.

Successful completion of remedial courses in HSPA English or HSPA Mathematics will count toward the total number of credits required for graduation.  However, those courses will not satisfy the curriculum requirement for high school English or Mathematics.
