ENGLISH


HSPA REMEDIATION—ENGLISH            prerequisite - none             5 credits

This course is designed to improve students’ skills in writing, reading, and speaking through the teaching of literature (reading), grammar (composition), and process writing.  Emphasis is placed on meeting the individual needs of the students through diagnosis and remediation of skills to raise general competence.  Critical thinking is taught through discussion of literature and composition, formation and evaluation of an idea or opinion.  Students will be assigned to this course based upon student performance on the GEPA and performance in grade 8 English.

ENGLISH 9               prerequisite - none                                                      5 credits

Our freshman level English Language Arts course is designed to give students a broad function on which to build skills in the upper grades.  The objectives ensure that all 9th grade students have a cohesive groundwork in fundamental and higher skills before moving into the sophomore year.  Students are encouraged and expected to attempt to reconstruct different literary devices and elements as a way of connecting self-generated examples to teacher examples.  Students should also begin to seek connections between the materials and skills taught in class to their career majors and personal interests.  It is important that students begin to understand how language, reading, and writing are integral to functioning in the modern world and to their future education and employment.  In addition, the English 9 course is at the forefront of student media and computer literacy. Students must be adept at utilizing computers, media, and the internet to successfully compete in the future.  The course of study includes, but is not limited to: classical mythology, genre study through short story, study of the full length novel, Shakespeare and poetry.

ENGLISH 9 Honors   prerequisite - previous grades and test score                  5 credits

The Honors English Language Arts course designed for the advanced incoming freshman who may pursue a post-secondary education. These students are expected to enter the course with a well-established understanding of basic skills in reading and writing. Students are expected to attempt to reconstruct different literary devices and elements as a way of connecting self-generated examples to teacher examples. Students should also be able to draw connections between the materials and skills taught in class to their career majors and personal interests. English 9 Honors course is also at the forefront of student media and computer literacy; students must be adept at utilizing computers, media, and the Internet to successfully compete in the future. The course of study includes, but is not limited to, much of the subject matter broached by the regular English 9 course. The Honors course seeks to explore these topics more deeply and through a variety of more challenging materials.

ENGLISH 10                         prerequisite - English 9                                          5 credits

English Grade 10 is a course designed for the tenth grader.  The course content includes: all aspects of literature (short story, novel, poetry), communication (public speaking, evaluating the media, and listening skills), drama (both modern and Shakespearean), prescriptive grammar, and the writing process.  Major works of literature include:  The Miracle Worker, Of Mice & Men, Anthem, The Merchant of Venice, and To Kill a Mocking Bird.

HONORS  ENGLISH 10      prerequisite - Honors English 9                             5 credits

Honors English 10 is a course designed for tenth graders who may wish to pursue a post-secondary education. Students may also be recommended by a teacher for enrollment in this class. The course content includes all areas of the regular English 10 curriculum but enhances each unit by bringing the student to a higher level of thinking, providing more independent study and project work.  Major works of literature include:  Rebecca, The Crucible, The Merchant of Venice, Anthem, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Clan of the Cave Bear.

ENGLISH 11                         prerequisite - English 10                                         5 credits

This course addresses the multifaceted aspects of the English language: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  In terms of reading literature, the students read a survey of American Literature, including American poetry, short stories, drama, and nonfiction.  In addition, the students examine the novel and read such works as The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, and The Catcher in the Rye.  To compliment the study of these pieces of literature, students perform analytical tasks that employ writing, speaking, and listening skills.  The teaching methodology incorporates a variety of current media, including video, audio, computer, and networking technologies

HONORS ENGLISH 11       prerequisite -  Honors English 10                           5 credits

This course explores the entire English 11 curriculum and seeks to integrate subjects and tasks in a more interpretive, symbolic, and intuitive way.  Students move at a faster pace, and more independent study is required.  Thus, more units are covered, including Our Town, A Raisin in the Sun, and other supplemental novels. SAT preparation is also included within the instruction.

ENGLISH 12                        prerequisite - English 11                                         5 credits

English 12 exposes students to the English skills that they acquired in grades 9-11.  The student will continue to work on his/her knowledge of language, mechanics, and literature through the exploration of world literature.  In addition, a unit of study will focus on the writing of a research paper.

HONORS ENGLISH 12       prerequisite – Honors English 11                         5 credits

This course is the culmination of the English literature and language experience at Warren Tech.  As with the prior level classes, the course integrates reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, but with a focus on British and World Literature, workplace communication, college skills, and advanced research techniques.  Major works of literature include: Macbeth, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Murder on the Orient Express, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Troy. SAT preparation is also included within the instruction.
