ACADEMIC COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
CULTURAL LITERACY
GRADES 10-12 - prerequisite Eng. 9 5 Credits
The Cultural Literacy supplemental English course takes a unique approach in establishing connections between contemporary literature, pop culture, and classical texts. Students will, for example, examine classic literary archetypes, mythology, and canonical literature and find connections with everything from movies, to television, to rock music. The course also examines how history plays into the modern society, how the past shapes the present. Class discussions are integral to the learning process, and students will be challenged to read advanced texts, both classic and contemporary. The culmination of the course is to have students better understand the common thread through culture and literature and to better appreciate what's old is now and how the future is inexorably linked to the past.
